I was in Oswego from September 73 to December 76 and had an amazing time. We went to Bucks (the best) and Broadwells and the Shaky Patch literally every single night. I remember mixed drinks were literally 25 cents at I think Shaky Patch and lots of girls would hang out there. We'd buy like 10 tequlla sunrises in a 1-2 hour stay. Molson Golden was it at Bucks. The subs from Oswego sub were great. Snow was 6' on either side of the road for much of the winter, the price of gas was like 49 cents a gallon, drinking age was 18 and the speed limit was 65 everywhere.

This is my new book of ecologically sound, love poems inspired by night. By ecological, I mean I don't take the people, places, or things (all the neighbors, like starlings, tree bugs, and human hair) for granted. I put them right into the poems. I self-published an earlier edition of these poems in 2006. The first half of this book is that book, ending with the line, "and then God said/ let there be even more Earth." And then it goes on from there. Right to the back cover, to be precise. You can order one of these right from the source, at Transmission Press, for the price of cheap cheap, uptown dirt ($3.50). It's not a House Press book, but both Wade Boggs and Roger Clemens eventually played for the Yankees, and they were very successful with the ladies.

Call for Work - Calling all Artists

The making of mail as art, “mail art” has a history stretching back at least to the 1950s. Mail art has in the past rooted in a rejection of the commerce and exclusivity of the gallery show. The making of mail art, “mail-art” continues to be a common practice in an age dominated by electronic communication. This exhibition will continue to break down the division between the mailbox and the gallery. To that end, Niagara County Community College Art Gallery is seeking submissions for an upcoming exhibition, aiming to display the myriad manifestations of mail art. Artists working in all media are encouraged to participate. The topic and content of each piece is solely the choice of the artist. Artists are asked to produce one piece of mail art and send it to guest curator Becky Moda. Your work will be displayed in a cataloged group exhibition in the Spring. After the exhibition closes, each participating artist will receive via mail the work of another artist. “Senders receive,” as mail artists say.

The mail art movement is uniquely populist and non-commercial, involving non-traditional distribution methods and the potential for global reach. Let's breathe new life into this fascinating movement, which predated and in some ways predicted the artist networking boom enabled by the internet.

It is asked that the artists adhere to the following guidelines:

1. Please send one piece of mail art to: Mail Art, NCCC Gallery, Niagara County Community College, 3111 Saunders Settlement Road, Sanborn, New York 14132-9460 by February 14, 2008.

2. The mail art can take any shape, in two or three dimensions. Pieces can expand when opened, but must be easily re-mailed for less than five dollars.

The heart behind the heart of the 2007 Electric City Spectacular poster belongs to Scott Puccio: darling of Buffalo, the apron wearing, special lighter making Italian wonder, the Filmmaker.

The Film of the Thousand Nights and a Night�, which was screened in somewhat prototype form at the Spectacular, will be shown in the New York Film Festival this October.

Very fitting for one who has worked so hard to make an imprint of the hand on his work, so you can quite viscerally feel the Filmmaker's process: watch the beating of the heart, the shaking of the hand, the bounce of the step, the earth moving below, the paper cut collaged filmed, the silence in the room outside the projector blinking rapidly. Using the Arab epic as more of a framework layer for the film than guide or inspiration, the work is divided into sequences bearing titles as signposts in the jungle like claw of the film, a controlled chaos always reflecting the artist's disciplined hand invisibly inside the images.

Dare I speak of film as poem? The titles of the film unwrap reveal and conceal, point in multiple somehow linked direction. It calls to mind Mr Puccio's favorite living poet, Matthew Klane, whose very short poems spin off the weight of the title. Watch this filmmaker weave a deluge of a particular, self-defined cut of image that moves through the screen in a heartbreaking pace, often too fast for the mind to process, the weight of the work finding a way to fill the deep eyes and mystify. His is a heart of hearts; Never a film of his you couldn't smell it on.

Three cheers for the Filmmaker, his heart, his hands.

Electric City, Front Park, Arrow

For the small press book fair that took place in Buffalo a few weeks ago, some of us made little books specially for the event. Made in a run of 50, Lowinger's poems in Front Park sprawl across the landscape of Buffalo's lake front. One of the disappointments for me was that I didn't get to hear Aaron read from this book on Friday - he choosing to sing a Leadbelly inspired tune instead. Here's a taste from that book:

Another book in a run of 50, mine and Luke Daly's By the Weight of an Arrow, which is made up of a poem I wrote in response to some of Luke's visual work, and collages Luke made in response to the poem.

I was greatly impressed with the series of readings that took place on Friday and Saturday, but the one that stood out the most for me was Tawrin Baker's reading. When Tawrin reads I always feel like I'm being led to a very strange place. And when Aaron reads, I feel like I'm getting hit with a bath of NyQuil and Kerosene. Anyone up for doing a House Press CD?

Spell magazine

Spell magazine is a journal for contemporary, experiment-centered poetry. The first issue was released in March of this year, the second issue came out in August. Spell is currently undertaking a project that centers around the idea of Maps. The special issue will feature a variety of poets all expressing their own conception of how to map the world. This idea might take on vastly different formal modes. In the end the issue should function as a sort of Atlas that one might use to find their way, at some level, around the world.
